PSA: The Nintendo Switch 2 Uses A New Type Of MicroSD Card

These ones only!

I wrote a piece earlier this week about the common Nintendo Switch 2 myths being debunked, and part of that was the fact that the Switch 2 uses a new type of MicroSD card that is brand new to market with only a few options available.

Sadly, I’ve still seen 3 separate people today alone who have purchased a MicroSD card that isn’t compatible with the Switch 2 so wanted to call this out again.

The Nintendo Switch 2 can only use MicroSD Express cards which provide faster reading/writing speeds required for Switch 2 games. These use a PCie interface which allows them to reach higher speeds and shouldn’t be confused with other MicroSD cards of similar names including MicroSD Extreme, MicroSD Ultra or any other kind of MicroSD apart from Express.

At launch locally, there’s two that are compatible. One is the officially licensed SanDisk MicroSD card which is 256GB and interestingly enough EB Games homebrand Atrix have 256GB-1TB variations.

Right now, stock is limited, but I don’t think it will be long before we see others pop up from the likes of Samsung and cheaper alternatives, and the Switch has an increased 256GB of storage internally as well.

Without doubt the no-brainers for me are the two starter packs.

If protection is what you’re after, there’s a massive range of screen protectors and cases:

There’s also a bunch of grips and magnetic charging stand that I absolutely love the look of:
